The Magician's Daughter by H.G Parry

A must read for future writers.

Let me be more specific, in the first hundred pages this story clearly follows the Hero's Journey. This book builds a magical world but it's focus is on the main character Biddy. Our heroine is a young girl coming into adulthood; which is a theme of this novel. Then she is thrown into a completely different world, of course unprepared for it, and must face down not only her expectations but also the fate of something she has loved all her life: Magic.

The first hundred pages set up the story beautifully and I found myself following a nicely paced narrative till the very end. This is also a story about a found family and coming to realize that sometimes fantasy doesn't live up to reality.

Biddy by the end is clearly changed, which is necessary for a story to have value to the readers. In the beginning of the novel it sets up that Biddy wants to desperately be free of her current life and to run wild and free in a different place. That world doesn't live up to what her fantasies are and she finds herself desperate to get home. But by the end she finds that while she wants to run off, she also finds a deep comfort in home.

This novel perfectly follows the Hero's Journey and I hope that future author pick up this book and give it a good study. I know I will.
